This is a bit like saying that Beethoven composed some kind of symphonies.
Yes, Beethoven composed “some kind of symphonies” for the people who do not care or know symphonic music. I do not have a lot exposure/experience ...

There's a bunch more filmed beethoven on youtube. The Karajan performances are really well presented, the 5th is really cool. Check it out even if you despise Karajan's earlier 5ths, the cinematography and drama of the filming is great. http://www.yo...

I had to take a look at this thread... I've played the few Beethoven symphonies that I have today. one 5 and two 7.After 1 LP side of Böhm/Berlin I couldn't stand anymore and actually thought "what a stupid symphony!".I decided to give Carlos Kleiber...

I know zero about pressings, but the Kleiber DG has "signature series" written on it, not "Privilege". Same thing?Yes, I'd really like to catch something like that live. There will be a Beethoven Symphony #5 performed here in November. Conductor Andre...
For me, the success of a Beethoven performance comes down to interpretation, not orchestral sound.
Not for me. I look for the “whole package” and not only in Beethoven. I do not relay collect “music” but rather “event...
I'm not that 'into' Debussy or Ravel, so I thought some Beethoven sonatas might give me a better idea of his playing to start off with.
That is kind of funny as I am not 'into' the Gieseking’s Beethoven– I...

Well, my Great Recordings of the Century EMI CD has arrived of the Opp 53, 57, 109 & 110 piano sonatas by G. It's almost reversed what I expected to hear in that, from what I have heard of his reputation, I would have expected him to ...

This is intensely moving. Both players are consistently inspired from beginning to end. This is real chamber music...

Interesting comments Romy & mats. I must admit that I enjoy a variety of orchestral sounds with Beethoven - the VPO, Berlin Phil, LAPO, Chicago, LSO - all are "traditional" orchestral sounds but all are different. And...

A fascinating take on a holistic reception of sound.https://www.cpr.org/2020/09/28/how-did-beethoven-compose-when-he-was-deaf-we-asked-evelyn-glennie-how-she-feels-sound/?fbclid=IwAR2X_LCMLqRMlD0skkKGpOrfa1zny68zzIVvQtk9RcTEAFETD8oTE4PPhko...

Perhaps we mean different things by the word 'accident'. For me, an accidently great piece of art would be if I painted things at random on a canvas and it 'accidentally' turned out to be identical to a masterpiece by Rembrandt. Pure chan...
I agree about the fragility but perhaps less so about "toy like". I am just now hearing for the first time Beethoven's 7th by Nanut and the second movement is very lovely, beautiful, mesmerizing and as the Eroica seemingly well und...

On this Saturday Boston Baroque performed in Jordan Hall Beethoven’s Symphony No.9. Boston Baroque is a very interesting group. It was a small perhaps 20 people chorus with truly phenomenal singer and it was a spectacular period-instrument band. You...

It is a tradition in Boston to close the Tanglewood season with Beethoven IX symphony and it is almost a tradition to pay it very badly. Today was not an exception. Michael Tilson Thomas led BSO with Tanglewood Festival Chorus with the celebrated wo...

I'm still enjoying my recently acquired Barenboim set recorded by EMI in the late 60's. I've been trying to get on with some of the Brendel work but I can't bring myself to like it enough yet. With regard to the string quartets I've been enjoying the...

The Barenboim's not so hot, while the Brendel is a decent starter set -- he gives you the right notes to learn. But there are many better.

Thanks for the recommendations, Romy. And for the warning about the Mengelberg Rach3 - several of those are available cheap! One composer you have not mentioned is Beethoven ..... so I have bought 1 CD of early sonatas and 1 CD of late sonatas.&...

Hi Romy,I'm not too sure if I fully understand your post. What I do understand is, that particularly Beethoven left A LOT OPEN the conductors' own interpretation(s) and I also understand that this was not TOO unusual a thing to do at this time. H...
.......By the way, Robin, when I referred to "Furtwangler's incomparable war time Beethoven 7" in my Neumann mic post a while back I of course meant his 9th. You mention how great performances "trump" the gear, or even the record...
